The Radio Frequency Tent at Unity Day 2008
Radio Frequency was started in 2006 by a handful of close friends in Leeds, borne out of a frustration with what was offered by the various local and national radio stations. Their aim was to showcase the best in jungle and drum & bass, played by the areas finest up and coming DJs, to an audience longing for something better than the generic fare forced upon them every time they switched on their radio.
Two and a half years later, the music policy has expanded to include a variety of genres including dubstep, reggae, bassline, hiphop, techno and more, but the original ethic remains: quality underground music provided for the people of Leeds by the areas finest young talent. With the addition of web streams to the station’s arsenal in 2007, Frequency now broadcasts globally seven days a week to an enthusiastic and loyal fanbase.
Since May 2006, some of the scene's most prestigious names have graced the Radio Frequency decks - Heist, Taxman, Caspa, Goth Trad, Heny G... the list goes on. In addition, the station has hosted a succession of sell-out nights in Leeds, including the memorable first birthday bash which crammed all of our resident DJs on to one line-up, and other nights with prolific artists such as Randall. The station also hosted a stage at Unity Day 2008 which was a massive success - no doubt because Radio Frequency has the unique ability to reach out and unite various separate communities in Leeds.
2009 sees Radio Frequency taking it one step further with a brand new website. With the station’s reputation growing steadily, we felt it was time to step up our game and finally get round to putting together a proper site! This site will form the centre for all things Frequency - we'll be streaming live 24/7, featuring profiles for all Radio Frequency artists, giving information on local events, a photo section, special guest mixes, further info on schemes we support such as the Princes Trust and more. Everything you need to keep you locked in firm to the North’s best underground music station, whether you're in Leeds or Timbuktu.
With 'The Frontline Sessions' pulling in big audiences each week, we thought it was time we caught up with DJ Antix to find out more about his influences and what to expect from his weekly show with MC Pean, Every Staurday 7-9pm.
