Dr Mark

Music has always been a love of Dr Mark's Ð from the days of sitting in his Sheffield bedroom in the early 80s recording self made radio shows on cassette tapes, listening to the charts every week, to moshing to grunge, rock and indie in the early 90s. But it was in 1994 when he suddenly took an interest in Happy Hardcore and met his now best mate Stefan, aka DJ Pleasure, who hosted radio shows on Sheffield stations Fantasy FM and Joy FM.

The moment he walked into the studio for the first time he fell in love with the concept of mixing vinyl and instantly went out, spent his whole student loan on a couple of technics, borrowed some vinyl and got practising for hours every day. That was the start of it all and since then he has progressed through the genres of Jungle, Drum & Bass, House, Breaks, Old Skool and Techno. Fortunately the Happy Hardcore phase fizzled out quickly.

Dr Mark plied his trade in House on Mainline 102, a station in Sheffield, and in 1999 relocated to Huddersfield, attaining resident and guest slots at various bars and clubs around town. Playing Drum & Bass was always a desire and in 2000 he got residency at Beatzcentral, a monthly Drum & Bass night. The night started off with a few mates in a room, but two years down the line they were hosting names like Grooverider, Nicky Blackmarket, DJ Sy, Ray Keith, L Double and Simon Bassline Smith.

In 2002 Dr Mark took the plunge and moved over to big bad Leeds, where for a few years he was into the party scene, setting up outdoor raves with sound systems Desert Storm (Drum & Bass/Techno) and Spoof (House). Dr Mark is now reunited with his first love: radio. Hosting alongside DJ Poultergeist, Surgery Sessions is a weekly show featuring Drum & Bass, Jungle and Old Skool - a far cry from his first ever vinyl, The Tweets' Birdie Song and all them 80s cassette tapes.
