Listen LiveIT DOESN'T HAVE TO HAPPEN
It Doesn't Have to Happen

Too many young people have experienced the terrible effects of knife crime.

The injuries and deaths don’t have to happen but the fact is, if you carry a knife, you are more likely to get stabbed yourself.

It Doesn’t Have to Happen is a campaign that was created by young people who want to take a stand against knife crime. We are taking positive action to get the message out that knife crime doesn’t have to happen. Their aim is to stop young people from carrying and using knives. We need as many young people as possible to speak out so that we can end the pain, injuriesand deaths that knives cause. Why don’t you join in?

Listen Liveunity day
Unity Day

Hyde Park Unity Day is a series of events climaxing with a 12 hour day of celebration for the community and visitors of Leeds 6. Since 1996 they have benefited from the enthusiasm of over 260 team members. Each year a new team evolves through social contacts as well as public meetings where any and all are welcome to join in and make a positive contribution of ideas and energy. There are no paid members of this team, so the professional manner in which Hyde Park Unity Day is organised is all the more impressive as it is done for fun! Its not just a question of taking people as you find them but where, how or what you leave them with.

Hyde Park Unity Day is a day of celebration for the local community to show the best of whom the people of Leeds 6 are. The community had lost a local Pub, the 'Newlands' through riots in 1995, which attracted intense national media coverage and this led to a negative portrayal of the area which we as a community had to come to terms with theirselves. Hyde Park Unity Day was set up to change this If you can help out, in any way - head over to their website and find out more.

Listen Livepat regan legacy

Pat Regan

Pat Regan believed it was time to start cleaning up the streets and change her community for the better, after her youngest son Danny, was killed in a shooting in 2002. No-one was arrested for this crime and Pat turned her energy towards decreasing violence in her home city. Linking up with activists in Manchester who had formed a group called Mothers Against Violence, Pat formed a Leeds branch and campaigned tirelessly against knife and gun crime. Her determination brought the cause to the attention of royalty and cabinet ministers, including the then-Prime Minister, Tony Blair. With a cruel irony, Pat was found stabbed in her flat in Burley in June 2008. Her grandson Rakeim has been detained in connection with her murder.

Pat's son Shane commented on his mum's work: "Due to the work, energy and ultimately the death of Pat Regan, there has been some changes in the way people are living their lives - I can feel it everywhere I go. The young are asking “how can we help your mum's work carry on"? So our family has set up a trust (The PR Trust). Now is the time for the people to get more involved in changing our own community for the better."

Listen Livetrident - stop the guns
Trident - Stop the Guns

For a small number of people carrying a gun, or living in fear of gun crime is an everyday reality. Whilst gun crime is still at low levels, this gives little comfort to those who see guns being carried and used in their communities. Unfortunately increasing numbers of young people are being affected. Shootings are occurring for trivial reasons such as someone thinks they’ve been disrespected or sometimes are in revenge for an earlier argument or crime.

If you choose to carry or use a gun you are limiting your future to only three options:1. Being arrested and ending up spending years locked up in a prison or youth offenders' institution. 2. Being shot at and injured. 3. Being shot at and killed. If you carry a toy or imitation gun you may cause police to believe the gun is real and send armed police to respond, thus increasing your own risk of being shot. Don't take a toy or imitation gun out into public.

In other cases people are using toy or imitation guns that have been converted to fire real ammunition. These are known to explode in the users hands causing horrific injuries because they are not designed to be a proper gun.

Carrying a gun puts your friends and family at risk. Do you want to be responsible for them being threatened, injured or killed? Or perhaps you would prefer them to plan your funeral or occasionally drop in to see you in prison?

If you have information that can help make our streets a safer place, head over to the trident website and find out what you can do to help, confidentially

Radio Frequency Tales from the Dark Side

Radio Frequency was started in 2006 by a handful of close friends in Leeds, borne out of a frustration with what was offered by the various local and national radio stations. Their aim was to showcase the best in jungle and drum & bass, played by the areas finest up and coming DJs, to an audience longing for something better than the generic fare forced upon them every time they switched on their radio.
